Dumfries ASC Appoint New Head Coach

October 20, 2017

Dumfries Amateur Swim Club congratulate Anthony Ryan who was recently officially appointed as their Head Coach.

Anthony began his swimming journey in the year 2000 training with many different clubs on the way: Crewe Flyers, Carlisle Aquatics, Annan Alligators and then of course Dumfries ASC.

His career as a competitive swimmer saw him achieve multiple national medals. His greatest accolades are namely being part of the Relay Team that became National Champions and British Championship Finalists. He competed in many School Games and Intercounty Championships and was in fact selected for not 1 but 3 different Counties (Cheshire, Cumbria and South West Scotland). In addition to this Anthony’s skills took him outdoors to The British Open Water Development Camp in France. He also still holds some Club Records within DASC in the 17 and over category - Short Course 400m and 1500m free.

Anthony hung up his goggles in 2012 and became a volunteer coach within the club. This new chapter has seen him develop within a wide variety of platforms such as:  assisted within Scottish Swimming Development at two District Regional Programmes, one Stroke Camp, Lead Coach at a Regional Camp and Assistant Coach at the UK School Games.

Awards to date include Dumfries and Galloway Young Development Coach of the Year 2014 and Regional Development Coach of the year 2017. All of this by the age of 22!

His passion for the sport, his holistic approach, his ability to see each swimmer’s individual strengths /needs for development, and of course his sense of humour are the key elements that make him the successful coach he is today.

His swimmers describe him as “funny”, “cool,” “amazing”,” entertaining”,” motivational”, “innovative”, “trustworthy”, “helpful”, “passionate about making you a better swimmer” “enthusiastic”, “unpredictable” and all unanimously agree he has “great banter!”

Finlay Hastings, Boys Captain said 'Anthony is a great Head Coach, he is an inspiration to the swimmers, easy to talk to and always available for advice'.

Sophie Dodd, Girls Captain concurs and said 'Anthony is always willing to help his swimmers both in and out of the pool environment. I genuinely believe we are lucky to be coached by such an enthusiastic, diligent coach'.

Anthony continues to push forward to put Dumfries athletes well and truly on the Swimming map. From all here at DASC we wish him every success in his endeavours.
