20 swimmers from Dumfries Amateur Swim club qualified to attend this year’s Scottish National Age Group Championships.
This was a 5 day event held at Aberdeen Aquatics Centre from the 29th of March to the 2nd of April. Over 1000 of the best age group swimmers representing 86 clubs from across the U.K competed in both individual and team events. The atmosphere was incredible and oozed team spirit.
This was a first national event for some of our swimmers and they absolutely rose to the challenge with grit and determination. Seasoned national competitors from the club were a tremendous support. Relay events were a crescendo of excitement with screams of encouragement from teammates on poolside. Many of the team qualified for individual finals and special mention must go to Cameron Gordon a Double Scottish Champion in both 50 and 100m fly. Spencer Bullivant also graced the podium with a silver in 200free and bronze in 1500 free. Overall the team of Dumfries swimmers finished 16th in the club points, a phenomenal achievement.
Head coach Anthony Ryan said ‘Tremendous team effort. They have been building in training and racing to hit this meet and learn from the experience of competing at a national event. Swimmers thrive on the big stage.’
A highlight for the team was to watch Commonwealth Champion and Olympian Hannah Miley in action.
Thanks must go to Team Managers Hazel Hastings and Mark Watret who gave up valuable holidays to accompany and support the swimmers for the duration of the Meet. Thanks to coaches Anthony Ryan, Gordon Glasgow and Ellie Minto for their input, encouragement and feedback.
Finally thanks must also go to Eric and Karen Green at BDS Digital for sponsoring this event.
